How to make Dream Dust in Graveyard Keeper 2

Dream Dust is one green rune plus one blue rune. Study Water and Blood, put a flask on the shelf, mix, and know what to check when the lab refuses.

The short answer

Dream Dust needs a total of 1 green rune and 1 blue rune. Water carries 1 green and Blood carries 1 blue, so Water plus Blood is the starter recipe. Study both at the Study Table first, place an Alchemy Flask on the Flask shelf inside the laboratory, then pick Water and Blood in Laboratory I. Slot order does not matter.

Your next steps

  1. 01

Get into the tower laboratory. The chest there holds starter Water, Blood and some Science.

  2. 02

Study Water and Blood at the Study Table so their runes become visible to the lab.

  3. 03

Put Alchemy Flasks on the Flask shelf in the lab room; flasks in your backpack do not count.

  4. 04

Open Laboratory I and select Water and Blood in either order.

  5. 05

Check that the result slot shows Dream Dust, then start one brew.

  6. 06

Hand the Dream Dust to the Plague Doctor to finish Sweet Dreams and collect two zombies.

Why everybody needs Dream Dust early

Dream Dust is the item that frees the Plague Doctor. Albert is stuck in the basement under the Abandoned Tower, and the Sweet Dreams quest ends when you bring him a batch. His reward is two free zombies, which is the fastest way to get your first workers. That makes Dream Dust one of the first real alchemy jobs in the game, and the one most people get stuck on.

It keeps its value later. Dream Dust goes into Crop Boosting Fertilizer I (2 Peat plus 1 Dream Dust), into incense, and into the fairy-summoning chain. The Alchemist sells it for about 1 silver if you are ever short, but making it costs almost nothing once the lab is set up.

Getting into the laboratory

The tower opens through Larry’s quest, Dungeons and… that’s it, probably. You clear the underground blockage with 3 Bronze Details and 3 Wooden Planks, then use the medallion and the secret combination to get in. Good Fellow comes first and needs village reputation 10, so if Januarius will not summon anyone yet, raise village reputation with Herm’s and the twins’ quests.

Inside you will find Laboratory I, the Study Table, the Flask shelf and a chest. Open the chest before anything else. It contains the Water, Blood and Science you need for the first batch.

Field note: Bronze Details show up in this quest, the church repairs and Jack’s boat. Making ten or so in one session saves several trips to the anvil.

How the runes add up

Alchemy in Graveyard Keeper 2 is arithmetic. Every studied ingredient carries red, green and blue runes, the lab adds them up colour by colour, and if the totals match a product exactly, you get that product. Order is irrelevant, ingredient quality does not change the runes, and there are no negative runes to cancel anything out.

Dream Dust’s target is 1 green and 1 blue with no red. Water plus Blood hits it exactly. Add Stone (2 red) and the total no longer matches, so the lab will show something else or nothing at all.

The Study Table step, explained

Studying an item spends Science, sometimes Faith as well, and pays you technology points in return. It is a one-time unlock: once Water is studied, every future brew can use it. The lab chest gives you enough Science for the first two studies, so you do not need to farm anything before your first Dream Dust.

After that first batch, Science becomes a resource worth planning. You get it by decomposing items at the same table, and Science Kits are by far the best value, 30 Science each. The science guide covers that chain if you want to study a lot of ingredients at once.

Hover an item before studying it. The tooltip shows the cost and which colour of technology point it will pay, which is fixed per item. Studying things you already need for alchemy kills two birds: you unlock the ingredient and bank points for the tree.

Field note: Blood comes out of corpse pockets at the Autopsy Table, and every pocket you pick also pays one blue technology point. Keep a few Blood in the lab chest so the next batch never waits on a delivery day.

When the lab refuses

If Water or Blood is missing from the ingredient picker, it has not been studied. The item is in your inventory, but the game hides unstudied ingredients from the lab until the Study Table reveals their runes. This is by far the most common snag.

If the flask requirement stays red, your flasks are in the wrong place. The lab only sees flasks in the same room, on the Flask shelf. A bottle of Alchemy Flasks I gives five uses, and each brew consumes one, so keep a spare bottle on the shelf before you queue a batch.

If the Study Table itself seems frozen after you put an item in, that was a launch bug. Update 1.005 fixed the table locking after item insertion, so update before you go looking for a missing requirement.

  • Ingredient missing from picker: study it first.
  • Flask requirement red: move flasks onto the room’s Flask shelf.
  • Result slot shows a question mark: the runes match a product you have not learned yet.
  • Result slot blank: the totals do not match any product.

Other ways to make Dream Dust

Water plus Blood is the classic, but it is not the only route. The community database lists 23 combinations that land on 1 green and 1 blue. Single ingredients such as Peat already carry the right totals, and the Apothecary’s alchemic powders give you green and blue in any mix you like.

Pick whichever ingredient you have in surplus. Blood comes from bodies, so if you would rather keep it for the Magic bell, a Peat-based recipe frees it up.

Making a batch

Once a recipe works, you can queue anywhere from 1 to 999 brews. Every brew needs its own flask and its own set of ingredients, so check stock against the count. Touching any ingredient slot resets the count to one, which is annoying the first few times.

Laboratory II, unlocked for 20 red and 40 green technology points, lets you mix three ingredients instead of two. You do not need it for Dream Dust, but it opens up most of the later potions. Brewing also pays technology points matching the product’s runes, so Dream Dust nudges both your green and blue totals.

Common questions

Do I have to use Water and Blood?+

No. Any combination that adds up to 1 green and 1 blue works. Water plus Blood is simply the cheapest at the start.

Why is Blood not in the lab’s ingredient list?+

It has not been studied. Study it at the Study Table and it appears in the picker.

Do flasks in my backpack count?+

No. The lab only uses flasks placed on the Flask shelf in the laboratory room.

Can I buy Dream Dust instead?+

Yes, the Alchemist sells it at every tier for about 1 silver. You still need the town built up that far.

Does ingredient order matter?+

No. The lab only compares rune totals.

What do I get for giving Dream Dust to the Plague Doctor?+

Sweet Dreams finishes and Albert gives you your first two zombies. The quest also rewards the Alchemist’s Clothes outfit.
