Graveyard Keeper 2 fishing: rods, bait and tension
Where to get a rod, which bait unlocks which fish, where each species lives, and how to win the reel-and-release minigame without snapping the line.
The short answer
Get your first rod from the twins by finishing Two Peas in a Pod, and put it on your toolbar. Seven fish bite with no bait; the rest need Breadcrumb, Insect or Live Bait, each unlocked by a Fishing technology. When a fish bites you have 0.7 to 2 seconds to hook it. Then hold to reel while it rests and let go while it fights, so tension never hits 100.
VIEW IMAGE ↗What to check, in order
- 01
Finish Two Peas in a Pod (6 Clay Plates) for the twins to get a rod.
- 02
Move the rod from the backpack to the toolbar; you need at least Farming 1 to cast.
- 03
Check the spot’s bait window to see which fish can bite with what you carry.
- 04
Hook quickly when the float dips.
- 05
Hold while the fish rests, release while it fights, and watch the line colour.
- 06
If nothing bites at a spot that used to work, move on; the stock is depleted for now.

Getting a rod
Your first rod is a quest reward. The twins by the bridge south of the village want six Clay Plates for Two Peas in a Pod, and they pay with a basic rod and 5 village reputation. Clay Plates need Pottery I and a Potter’s Wheel, so this quest doubles as your introduction to pottery.
Better rods come from the Fish Stand in town, and each tier of the stand sells one. You can also craft rods once you have Fishing I, which costs 15 green points and needs Flax Thread. Every rod adds to your Farming mastery, which is the branch fishing uses.
| Rod | Stand tier | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Amateur Rod | I | 1 silver |
| Advanced Rod | II | 5 silver |
| Pro Rod | III | 100 silver |
Field note: The rod has to be on your toolbar. A rod in the backpack does nothing, and this is the number one reason people cannot cast.
Bait and how to unlock it
Seven species bite on a bare hook. Everything else needs bait, and each bait type is a Fishing technology. Bait is made at the Kitchen Table, four per batch, and every cast uses one bait whether you catch anything or not.
| Bait | Recipe (makes 4) | Unlock | Farming needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | Available from the start | 1 | |
| Breadcrumb Bait | 1 Bread | Fishing II (40 green) | 2 |
| Insect Bait | 4 Fireflies | Fishing III (120 green) | 4 |
| Live Bait | 1 Lacquer + 1 Flesh | Fishing IV (revealed by the story) | 6 |
Where the fish are
Each area has its own species list, and a few legendary fish only live in one place. The village has Mythic Carp, the forest Celestial Salmon, the port Kraken Jr and the swamp Swamp Ghost and Elder Catfish. Check the bait window at each spot; it shows exactly what can bite with your current bait.
| Area | Species |
|---|---|
| Home | Roach, Gudgeon, Crucian, Pike |
| Village | Roach, Gudgeon, Crucian, Herring, Bream, Mythic Carp |
| Forest | Pike, Carp, Salmon, Trout, Goldfish, Celestial Salmon |
| Port area | Anchovy, Mackerel, Tuna, Salmon, Goldfish, Kraken Jr |
| Swamp | Frog, Catfish, Silverfin, Eel, Swamp Ghost, Elder Catfish |
Winning the minigame
When the float dips, you have between 0.7 and 2 seconds to hook the fish. Miss it and the bait is gone. Once hooked, the fish alternates between fighting and resting. Hold the button while it rests to pull it closer. Release while it fights so tension drops. The fish lands at distance 100 and escapes at −100, and the line snaps if tension reaches 100.
Harder fish want short bursts rather than long pulls. A flashing line means you are about to lose it: let go immediately. Higher Farming mastery and a better rod both make reeling faster and tension slower to build, which is why the same Pike feels easy with an Advanced Rod and miserable with the basic one.
- Fish resting: hold to reel in.
- Fish fighting: release to let tension fall.
- Line flashing: release now.
- Fish with a high Fight value, like Trout (15) or Elder Catfish (20), need more mastery or the Fisherman perk.
How hard is each fish?
Every species has a Fight value, and that number drives how fast tension climbs while it struggles. Small river fish are gentle; the legendary catches are brutal. The Fisherman perk knocks 1 to 6 points off each fish’s Fight, which makes a surprising difference on the top end.
Use these numbers to decide when a fish is worth chasing. If a Trout keeps snapping your line, it is not bad luck: Fight 15 with a basic rod and low Farming is simply a lot. Come back with an Advanced Rod, a muffin for +2 Farming, or the perk.
| Fish | Fight | Typical stock per spot |
|---|---|---|
| Roach | 2 | 2 |
| Pike | 9 | 1 to 2 |
| Frog | 10 | 5 |
| Trout | 15 | 1 |
| Celestial Salmon | 19 | 1 |
| Elder Catfish | 20 | 1 |
Field note: A Muffin adds +2 Farming for a full in-game day. Eat one before a session at the forest or swamp spots.
Why nothing is biting
Every spot holds only a few of each species, for example two Roach or a single Trout, and each catch removes one until the spot restocks. If a spot that worked yesterday gives you nothing, it is probably empty for now, not bugged. Move to another spot or switch bait to target a different fish.
The other usual causes are simpler: the rod is in the backpack, you have zero Farming mastery, or your bait does not suit any fish still in that spot.
What to do with your catch
Herm’s quest The Quiet Art asks for one Roach and one Gudgeon and unlocks filleting and fish cooking. After that, fish go three ways. The Fish Stand is the only trader that buys whole fish, at fixed prices from 10 copper for a Roach up to nearly 2 silver for an Eel. Fish fillets sold to Herm also add a little happiness each week. And cooked fish dishes are solid energy food.
The Fish Magnet achievement counts 50 landed fish. A Fisherman’s bag, 9 slots for fish and bait, keeps all of it out of your backpack.
Common questions
Do I need bait for every fish?+
No. Seven species bite without bait. The bait window shows what can bite with your current setup.
Which skill does fishing use?+
Farming. You need at least 1 to cast, and every rod adds Farming on its own.
Is bait used up if I miss?+
Yes. Each cast consumes one bait whatever the result.
Why did my line snap?+
Tension hit 100. Release whenever the fish is fighting, and let go at once when the line flashes.
Who buys whole fish?+
Only the Fish Stand in town. Other traders may buy fillets, but not whole fish.
Do fishing spots run out?+
Yes. Each holds a few of each species and restocks over time.
How long do I have to hook a fish?+
Between 0.7 and 2 seconds after the float dips. Watch the float rather than the fish.
Is a better rod worth it?+
Yes, for hard fish. A better rod adds Farming mastery and slows tension, and both make high-Fight species far easier to land. The Advanced Rod at 5 silver is the sweet spot for most players.
What is the best early bait?+
Breadcrumb Bait. It only needs Fishing II and bread, which you can bake or buy, and one Bread makes four bait.
Where does the legendary Kraken Jr live?+
At the port. Each area has its own legendary fish: Mythic Carp in the village, Celestial Salmon in the forest, and Swamp Ghost and Elder Catfish in the swamp.
