Jack in a Boat: Graveyard Keeper 2 quest checklist

Planks, Bronze Details and two rowers who only listen to someone the village trusts. The full checklist, plus what happens after Jack sails.

The short answer

Jack in a Boat has three parts you can do in any order: deliver 5 Wooden Planks in Twins’ Land, hand over 5 Bronze Details, and recruit the twins as rowers. The twins only agree once your village reputation is at least 10. When the tools and rowers are sorted, ask Jack if he is ready. He leaves the next time you sleep, and a letter after the following sleep unlocks the Magic bell recipe.

The three parts at a glance

Jack needs a boat to reach the stronghold at the port, and he reminds you that the armor he gave you earlier was not exactly a gift. The quest log splits his request into planks, tools and rowers. They are independent, so work on whichever you can do today and come back for the rest.

The rowers are the part that stalls people, because it has nothing to do with materials. You can hand in every plank and detail and still be stuck if the village does not trust you yet.

Making the planks

Wooden Planks come from Boards, not logs. Saw a log into a Board at the Sawhorse, then turn each Board into a Plank at Woodworking Workbench I once you have Woodworking I, which costs 10 red points. Five planks means five logs, five boards and a short session at the bench.

Do not hand in Oiled or Reinforced Planks; they are different items. If you are short on time, the Builder and Furniture Maker in town sell plain planks, but early on making them is quicker than walking to town.

Forging the Bronze Details

Bronze Details need the Bronze Craft technology. The full path, Bronze Works then Melting then Bronze Craft, costs about 45 red points, so plan your early tree around it. Details are forged at an anvil from Bronze Ingots, and ingots come from a furnace: 3 Bronze Scrap and 20 Fuel make 2 ingots.

Herm sells Bronze Scrap, and broken barrels and junk piles drop it too. This is the moment to make a big batch, because Bronze Details also go into the church repairs, the tower blockage and the Distillation Cube. The opening chapters need around 22 in total.

Field note: If the tool hand-in would not accept your details at launch, that was a bug: update 1.007 corrected the items Jack asks for.

Getting village reputation to 10

The twins will only row if someone they trust asks. That trust is village reputation, a shared pool for the villagers, Januarius, Herm, the twins and the town traders. It is not Jack’s personal reputation, which is a separate number on his portrait.

Three early quests give +5 village reputation each, and building or upgrading a trader’s shop in town adds 2 or 3. Two quests are enough: Herm’s Planted and Delivered (5 Wheat from your garden) and the twins’ own Two Peas in a Pod (6 Clay Plates from the Potter’s Wheel).

After Jack leaves

Once you tell Jack he is ready, nothing visible happens until you sleep. He departs during the first sleep. After the second sleep a letter arrives, and that letter is what unlocks the Magic bell recipe Herbert needs. If you are staring at Herbert’s quest wondering where the bell recipe is, you probably have one more night to sleep.

The letter also brings Agatha the Nun to the tavern, which starts the church questline, and it lets Swords and Bell move forward. The bell itself is simple once unlocked: 1 Blood and 1 Bronze Ingot. Keep a Blood from your next body for it.

  • Sleep 1: Jack sails.
  • Sleep 2: the letter arrives and the Magic bell recipe unlocks.
  • Then: Agatha appears at the tavern; Swords and Bell can be finished.

A fast route through the quest

Start the wheat the day you unlock Gardening, because it takes a while to grow and Herm will not budge without it. While it grows, saw logs into boards and turn them into planks; you need five for Jack and a few more for the twins’ plate quest and the tower. Then talk to Jeffry at the Hangman’s House, who is part of the twins’ quest, and make the six Clay Plates at the Potter’s Wheel.

Hand in the plates and the wheat, and your village reputation sits at 10. Bronze is the slow part, so run the furnace in the background the whole time: scrap in, ingots out, details at the anvil. By the time reputation is ready, the details usually are too.

Finish in one visit: planks in Twins’ Land, details to Jack, a chat with the twins, then Jack. Go to bed. Wake, sleep again, and the letter is waiting.

Field note: Make a couple of spare planks and plates. The tower blockage wants 3 Wooden Planks too, and extra plates sell to Herm.

Rewards and why they matter

The quest pays modestly in the moment: Jack’s reputation, a Town Gratitude, the Blacksmith’s Clothes outfit and the A Man of Many Talents achievement. The real reward is what it unlocks. Without Jack’s departure there is no Magic bell, no barracks battle, no port, and the town stays out of reach.

Jack’s reputation keeps paying later too. His workshop chain in town takes him to 40 for the factory under your house and to 60 for Gunter’s PR contract, and this quest is the first step.

Common questions

Why does a full material hand-in not finish the quest?+

The rowers are a separate requirement. Raise village reputation to 10 and talk to the twins.

Is village reputation the same as Jack’s reputation?+

No. Jack has his own reputation. The twins check village reputation, a shared pool.

Where is the Magic bell recipe?+

It arrives with a letter after you sleep twice once Jack is ready: he leaves on the first sleep, the letter comes on the second.

Can I use Oiled Planks?+

No. The quest wants plain Wooden Planks.

How many Bronze Details will I need early on?+

About 22 across the opening chapters: 5 for Jack, 4 for the church, 3 for the tower blockage, 2 for the Distillation Cube and more for reinforced planks.

What outfit does the quest give?+

The Blacksmith’s Clothes, unlocked by the tools part of the quest.

Does the order of the three parts matter?+

No. Planks, tools and rowers can be finished in any order. Only the final conversation with Jack needs all three done.
