Graveyard Keeper 2 talents: claim your inspirations

Work fills inspirations, claiming them gives branch experience, and branch levels give talent points. The full chain, unlocking it on day one, and talents worth taking first.

The short answer

Doing work fills inspiration counters, like trees felled or bodies buried. When an inspiration hits its goal, you buy that level, usually for Faith carried in your backpack after the free first levels. Each purchase gives experience in one of the five branches, and enough experience levels the branch up and awards a talent point. Spend points on nodes in that branch’s tree.

The chain from work to talent

There are four steps, and the second one is where players get stuck. First, you do things and inspirations count them. Second, when a counter reaches its target, nothing happens until you go to the inspiration page and buy that level. Third, buying it gives experience in one of the five branches: Building, Farming, Smithing, Book writing or Anatomy. Fourth, enough experience levels the branch and gives you a talent point to spend in it.

Counts are cumulative and never reset. If you have felled a hundred trees, every Lumberjack level up to that count is waiting for you; you just have not claimed it.

Unlocking the tree on day one

Both the inspiration page and the talent tree start locked. They open once any branch has two finished, free inspiration levels ready to claim. The fastest way is Anatomy: Pickpocket completes after one pocket picked at the Autopsy Table, and Last Respects completes after one body is buried. Do both with your first body and the tree opens straight away.

Anything you finish before the page unlocks still counts, but you get no notification for it. Open the page once it unlocks and claim the backlog.

Your first talent points

Nearly every first level is free and worth 1 experience, and branch level 1 needs 2 experience. So any two first-level inspirations in the same branch give you a point. These pairs are the quickest early wins:

Quick first points
BranchInspirationsWhat to do
AnatomyPickpocket + Last RespectsPick 1 pocket, bury 1 body
BuildingLumberjack + Rock BreakerFell 5 trees, smash 3 rocks
SmithingJunk Fighter + Bronze CrafterSmash 5 barrels or junk, craft Bronze Nails 3 times

Field note: Take the +1 mastery node first in Building. Building mastery 3 is needed for wood wedges and Pieces of Stone, and rusty tools alone will not get you there.

How the tree is laid out

Each node costs one talent point and becomes available once every node above it is owned. Each branch opens with a +1 mastery node and has five mastery nodes in total; everything else is a perk. A single inspiration purchase can only raise a branch by one level at most, and leftover experience rolls into the next purchase in that branch.

Later inspiration levels cost Faith, and the price rises with level. Budget them against sermons and teleport stones; early Faith has a lot of competing uses.

Planning where your points go

Talent points are tied to the branch that earned them, so you cannot pour Farming points into Anatomy. That makes your daily routine the real decision. If you want more Anatomy, do more morgue work; if you want more Building, chop and mine. The tree follows your habits.

A good rule early on is mastery first, comfort second. The +1 mastery nodes unlock recipes and save energy on every swing, while most perks only help one narrow job. Once each branch you use has its first mastery node, start picking perks that fix your current annoyance: Deep Pockets if you keep running out of space, Cook if you are always short of food, Iron Will if insanity keeps shrinking your bar.

Before you spend, look one quest ahead. If the next story step needs clean organ removal, Expert Anatomist is worth more right now than anything in Farming, even if Farming is your favourite branch.

Budgeting Faith for inspirations

Free levels run out quickly, and after that most inspiration levels cost Faith. Faith also activates teleport stones and pays for some studies, and it only comes from one sermon a week. So it is worth deciding each Wrath how the week’s Faith will be split.

A simple split that works for most players: claim inspirations in the branch you are actively using first, activate one teleport stone on a route you walk every day, and keep three Faith back for an organ study. If a talent will solve a problem you hit every day, it beats a stone you use once a week.

Field note: Claim inspirations right after the sermon, while the Faith is still in your backpack. Faith left in a chest does not count.

Talents worth taking early

What is worth it depends on how you play, but a few talents pay off for almost everyone. Pick the ones that solve the problem in front of you this week.

Quirks and known issues

Some inspirations count before you can even see them; hidden ones reveal themselves later with progress already banked. Church quality and graveyard quality inspirations only count new records, so tearing down and rebuilding a decoration does not farm them. Oops Surgeon is the one inspiration that rewards failure, counting botched autopsies.

Two known problems at launch: Holy Routine never increases its counter, so it cannot be finished, and the Green Thumb perk claims +2 Farming but its bonus is never applied. Spend your points elsewhere until a patch fixes them.

Common questions

Why did my work not give a talent point?+

Completing a counter is only step one. Open the inspiration page and buy the level to get the experience.

Do inspiration counters reset when claimed?+

No. Counts are cumulative and never reset. Levels are still bought one at a time.

Where does the Faith for inspirations have to be?+

In your backpack. Faith in a chest does not count.

Why is my talent tree locked?+

It opens once a branch has two finished free levels. Pick a pocket and bury a body to unlock it via Anatomy.

Do my talents help my zombies?+

No. Zombies have their own talent tree and earn their own points.

Is there an achievement for inspirations?+

Yes. Stroke of Genius counts 150 inspiration level purchases.

What happens to leftover experience?+

It is kept. If a purchase gives more experience than the branch needs for its next level, the remainder counts toward the following level in the same branch.
